Thixomolding is a fabrication technique similar to injection molding that uses
magnesium alloys as the "resin" instead of plastic. Solid magnesium alloy pellets
are fed into the machine, heated to high temperatures and injected into a closed
die / mold. Parts from the machine usually need no additional machining or finishing.
Applications of Thixomolding
The worldwide interest in magnesium components addresses needs in the following
markets:
- Automotive
- Telecommunications
- Consumer Appliances
- Computers and Peripherals
- Recreational and Health
Benefits of Thixomolding
There are many benefits of Thixomolding. These include higher yield, increased
die life, lower utility costs, consistency of process and improved manufacturing
agility. The process is also suitable for producing parts requiring extremely
thin walls, 0.5 mm. Thixomolding produces net or near net-shape parts, reducing
finishing requirements as well as improving quality. Other advantages include
dimensional stability, low porosity and tighter part tolerances with reduced shrinkage.
